Baptisms & Naming Ceremonies
In the United Reformed Church, baptism (also known as a christening) is a sacrament that signifies the beginning of a Christian’s life as a member of the church. It is an declaration of faith, accompanied by baptismal promises to enable the baptised individual to live as one of God’s people and serve God’s purposes in the world.
Baptisms at St. Andrew’s typically take place during one of our normal Sunday services. As the sacrament of baptism is a public declaration that your child has become part of the church family, we feel it is important that the church congregation is there to support you and welcome your child.
You may wish to choose Godparents for your child. They will promise to pray and support your child and to help you to bring up your child in the Christian faith. It is an important and responsible role.
If you have been baptised as an infant, you may wish to renew your commitment publicly as an adult, and our minister is happy to talk to you about re-naming and re-commitment ceremonies.
God’s love is available to all, regardless of background. We can talk you through the options: you may prefer to have a Thanksgiving or Naming Service rather than a baptism – this website can help you think about what service you would like for your child: https://urc.org.uk/your-church/baptisms-weddings-and-funerals/recognising-and-celebrating-the-birth-of-your-baby
There is no charge for a baptism at St Andrew’s, but donations to the church are always welcome.
